I saw Unshackled at its World Premiere at the Rialto Theater in Atlanta. I will probably write up a separate page with pictures of the event at a later date. Unshackled is based on a true story involving a racist white guy getting put to jail for two life sentences for crimes he didn't commit. While in one of the last segregated jails of the United States, he meets a black guy. They don't get along, but eventually do due to the wonders of basketball. Ugh. Unshackled was barely above a standard TV movie in terms of quality. While I do admire the guy on whom this story if based eventually financing the story itself to hold true to his original story, it probably makes more for interesting reading than a movie. Hell, any book on screenwriting says when you adapt material, you don't stick exactly to the source-- what works in real life doesn't work for an actual movie. The acting is OK, except for the acting from the only two stars in the movie-Morgan Fairchild and Stacey Keach. Morgan Fairchild plays a nurse who works in the prison with a heart of gold and gives one of the worst performances I've seen ever. Everything she says is monotone, much like my normal voice. Stacey Keach is an owner of the prison and does a fairly decent job with his role, although most of it involves clipping bonsai bushes while smiling. Unshackled runs on for a bit too long and I wouldn't recommend unless you like the subject matter. Even then, wait until it comes out on video. I give Unshackled ** out of ****. . |
