Trekkies

Starring A bunch of rabid Star Trek Fans

Fan is short for fanatic. And when one thinks of fanatics, one thinks of religious fantatics. After watching Trekkies, one also thinks of Star Trek fans.

Trekkies is a documentary, both funny and sad at the same time. Many of the people in this movie are unbelievable. If you would have told me there’s a dentist office with a Star Trek theme in Orlando, I would have told you to shut up. Not anymore. Hosted by a minor cast member from one of the Star Trek shows, Trekkies travels to conventions, fans’ homes, and evens interviews some of the actors from both the original series and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Among the highlights of the movie are the Q virus and Scotty’s moving story of a girl on the brink of suicide who survived by following him to many Star Trek conventions.

The video quality varies greatly—while most of it is sharp, some of it is grainy… This is especially evident at some of the convention footage! A nice bonus during the end credits are clips from stand-up comedians joking about Star Trek… I wish they would have added the complete stand-up routine at the end of the video! Trekkies has very little music, but the opening credits have a weird re-mix of the original Star Trek theme song combined with clips of dialogue from William Shatner.

Trekkies is usually funny, sometimes disturbing, but always watchable.

I give Trekkies ***1/2 out of ****.
