Most video-game movies suck. The only decent one that has come out so far is the original Mortal Kombat movie. Street Fighter was terrible, Super Mario Bros. was sort of cool but didn't resemble the game too much, and Wing Commander was a lame sci-fi flick. How does Tomb Raider stack up? Tomb Raider is about Angelina Jolie mourning about her dead father, Jon Voight. She also travels around the globe searching for two pieces of a triangle that allow people to time travel. Tomb Raider could have been a lot worse. Then again, it could have been a lot better. The acting is pretty bad in this movie, although I didn't go to this movie to expect people to win an Oscar for acting! Angelina Jolie is monotone the whole time, Jon Voight does a good job in a role that is really just narration, the bad guy is your standard baddie with a British accent, the geek drinks Wild Cherry Pepsi, and the butler is amusing in a comic-relief role. Most of the movie is directed decently enough, but some of the shots had me confused. In particular, one establishing shot panned up really slowly and choppily. A few of the transitions were crappy as well. The action scenes are fun to watch, but I was bored watching a lot of them. I've only rented the first Tomb Raider game, so I'm not familiar with the video games, but in the movie Lara Croft is a very boring character. She makes smart-ass comments, always kicks the bad guys' asses, and saves the day. Bleh. Then again, that describes any action hero and I love Arnold Scharzenegger flicks so, go figure. Tomb Raider is a very average summer action movie. It's not going to blow your socks off, but it's not going to bore you to tears. Tomb Raider is a cheap knock-off of Indiana Jones with big breasts. I give Tomb Raider **1/2 out of ****. Indiana Jones rip-offs aside, The worst part of this movie, has to be the cinematography. It's spastic, and way too hyper kinetic. It seems like the director just got a new camera, and is still playing with all of the special features. I was entertained by the fight sequences, but the story was way too rushed. They tried to fit too much story into such a short amount of time. Tomb Raider was quite a disappoitnment. Angelina Jolie did decent acting job, but most males won't be paying attention to her acting. I give it ** out of ****. |
