Star Trek : Insurrection

Starring Patrick Stewart

If Star Wars movies lean towards the “fiction” aspect of science-fiction, the Star Trek movie lean towards the “science” aspect. More scientific technobabble, slower-paced plots, and more cerebral stories. A widely known fact about Star Trek is that the even numbered movies (which haven’t been numbered since Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country) are superior to the odd numbered movies. Star Trek: Insurrection is Star Trek IX (9 for those people who can’t read Roman Numerals).

The beginning of the movie isn’t half bad. On a planet containing peaceful people, Data suddenly goes renegade and starts shooting at things. Picard chases him down in a ship in a mildly humorous scene. So far, so good. The middle of the movie involves Picard and crew talking with the peaceful people about idealism for the whole middle of the movie. That’s right, over 30 minutes of New Age talk. The end of the movie picks up with some action scenes, but not enough to overcome the painfully slow middle of the movie.

There is nothing about the plot that makes it suited for a big-screen movie—instead it feels like an extended episode. Unless you’re a Star Trek devotee, don’t make this rental so. [e.n. - I really don't think that was very necessary.]

I give Star Trek: Insurrection **1/2 out of ****.
