I never saw the original Sleepaway Camp, so I can't say how it ranks compared to the first one. After watching Sleepaway Camp 2: Unhappy Campers, I don't think I would want to. A bunch of counselors tell each other about events that presumably happened in original Sleepaway Camp movie around a campfire. Certain counselors end up "missing"… Or are they dead? A major weakness of Sleepaway Camp compared to a lot of these other movies is that the identity of the killer is pointed out in the first murder scene! There's no buildup to who the killer might be, no multiple suspects, just lots of waiting around for the characters in the movie to figure out who the killer is. The deaths are cheaply done and the post-death quips aren't even funny or creative. As an example, the killer counselor finds a girl smoking pot in the woods. She ties her to a grill and covers her in gasoline. Before she lights the match, the killer says, "Don't do drugs!" The best death scene by far is when she pushes another counselor into an outhouse face first and smacks her with a stick to keep her down there. Also, the title of Sleepaway Camp bothers me. The camp in this movie isn't even called Sleepaway Camp, it's called Camp Rolling Hills! Granted, Camp Rolling Hills doesn't sound like a title for a horror movie, but at least it would make more sense. The nudity in this movie is gratuitous considering this scene: A GIRL wearing a white shirt over her bikini takes off her bikini top and lays back. A GUY runs towards her. GIRL: If you push me in the water, you are dead! The Guy pushes the Girl into the water. She screams and exits the water, her shirt see-through. Another example of nudity is a character who sleeps nude. It's kind of strange to pan over girls in their pajamas waking up to stop at a girl laying on her bed, topless. Sleepaway Camp 2 is funny because it's a horrible movie. It also is not an example of a good horror film. I give Sleepaway Camp 2: Unhappy Campers ** out of ****. |
