Slackers is a comedy that was pretty much universally blasted by critics upon its release. Having seen it, do I think differently? Slackers is about Devon Sawa and his two friends from college, one of which is Michael C. Maronna, the elder Pete of the old Nickelodeon TV show "The Adventures of Pete & Pete." They continually cheat their way through classes until Jason Schwartzman catches them. Can Devon Sawa get Jason Schwartzman a date with the class hottie James King before Schwartzman reveals their rampant cheating? Slackers is funnier than it has any right to be, and that is mainly because of the hilariousness of Jason Schwartzman as "Cool Ethan." His obsessive character is consistently funny as well as ocassionally disturbing. Devon Sawa and James King as the lead lovers are pretty bland and I think the movie would have been better if it would have focused more on comedy than the romantic comedy angle of the story. Michael C. Maronna has a pretty small part in the movie, but comes off as pretty wacky. This movie isn't nearly as gross as a lot of other gross-out comedies of late. The ending is pretty stupid. I give Slackers ** out of ****. I'm kind of torn when it comes to this movie. I know it wasn't a very good movie, and yet I found myself enjoying it. Despite the crappy attempts at plot involving the love story, this movie featured a number of fantastic scenes. Every scene that featured Jason Schwartzman was gold. Jason Schwartzman manages to pull off a wonderful performance playing a college student with an insane obsession for James Kings, who despite the masculine name is actually a female. Schwartzman's character exhibits a number of obsessions that strangely remind me of Mat. Where this movie lacks in story, it makes up in every scene that has Jason Schwartzman , or the older Pete from "The Adventures of Pete & Pete", or that wonderful scene where the incredibly hot redhead from "That 70's Show" masturbates. *** out of **** |
