Seven is one of the first movies that proved Brad Pitt's acting ability. Some may argue he could act in other films, like Interview With the Vampire, but I think he started to hold his own starting around either this film or the movie Twelve Monkeys-both were released around the same time. Did Brad Pitt deserve an Oscar for his role in Seven? No, but he did a decent job. The director of this movie, David Fincher, also directed an awful movie by the name of Alien 3. Seven isn't Fincher's only good movie-he also directed Fight Club. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman are two homicide detectives; Freeman's a veteran about to retire while Pitt's a rookie with some experience under his belt transferred to work with Freeman. What starts out to be a sick murder ends up into a series of cases linked by the seven deadly sins. Can Freeman and Pitt discover who the killer is before it's too late? From the first gruesome murder, Seven provides a dark film to accompany the dark cinematography. The directing and dialogue are very well done, as is the acting. The story moves along at a decent pace, although at some parts during the middle of the film the murder investigations are temporarily held off in order for more character development. I admire the ending of Seven most, however. In what could have been a cop-out ending resulting in a gun fight, the movie takes a different spin and subjects the audience to a chilling thirty minutes of dialogue between the killer and the two detectives. Little action, just pure dialogue. I give Seven ***1/2 out of ****. Rent it if you want to see an excellent dark thriller. |
