When I first saw the trailer for Rat Race, I was sort of intrigued by it from the cast alone. John Cleese and Jon Lovitz in the same movie? What could possibly go wrong? Rat Race is about John Cleese organizing a bunch of random people to get to a locker in Silver City, New Mexico. The first one there wins $2 million. This movie is very episodic. I liked some of the characters' stories better than the others. Surprisingly, the humor either hits (Jon Lovitz, Rowan Atkinson, John Cleese) or misses (Whoopi Goldberg, Amy Smart, Seth Green) throughout the entirety of each sequence. The audience seemed to laugh hilariously at each joke for some strange reason. It almost seems as if Rat Race should have gone straight to video. There's nothing really special about this movie. Rat Race has an awful opening credit sequence. I thought the poster design for the flick was stupid, but the opening credits are even worse. Rat Race also has a terrible ending. I'm not really sure how you could have had a good ending to his movie, except for ending on a funny joke or something. I give Rat Race **1/2 out of ****. Mat and I actually ended up watching this movie as a last resort, when it truned out that we got to the Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back sneak preview, a little too late. One might assume that the cast of Rat Race, is guaranteed to pay off in the laughs department. I beg to differ. Sure, you get to watch comedic hijinx from John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson who maintain pure hilarity in each of their scene, while Jon Lovitz always achieves humour. Whoopi Goldberg and Cuba Gooding Jr., find a way to cancel out most of the comedy, with the pain that they respectively bring to the screne. Honestly, each of their scenes were about as funny as getting the bubonic plague. Actually, they were probably a little less funny than that. The ending is also horrendous. Mat pointed out he wasn't sure how they could have ended this movie, but that's only because he's never seen "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.", which Rat Race actually ripped off. That or it was a really poor re-make form a guy who had never seen the first movie. *1/2 out of **** |
