According to Jackie Chan's excellent
autobiography I Am Jackie Chan, he made Police Story after he
starred in a US film The Protector. While I never have seen The
Protector, I understand it's rather bad. Police Story was intended
as Jackie's version of the American cop action movie. Surprisingly,
it barely rises above a traditional American action flick. Police
Story involves Jackie Chan as a cop in Hong Kong. After stopping
a rich guy involved with drug dealing, Chan has to deal with
keeping him in jail, watching over a girl that was the bad guy's
accomplice, and do lots of fight scenes. The opening sequence
of Police Story is very typical at first. Towards the end it
veers off into Jackie Chan zaniness, but there's not enough of
Chan's personality in this movie. The entire end of the movie,
while having some cool stunts, feels more at place in Miami Vice
than a Jackie Chan movie. You can't have a cop flick without
shoot-outs-I understand that. But, in my opinion, Chan's strengths
do not lie in gun play (unlike Chow Yun Fat)-they lie in hand
to hand combat touched with a goofy parody style. The only sequence
in Police Story that feels very "Jackie Chan-ish" is
a hilarious spoof on the Friday the 13th movies. While Police
Story certainly isn't the worst of the series, it's not the best
either. I think the only thing I do remember about this movie, is that I didn't quite like it as much as Jackie Chan's American released hits. So instead, I'll present you with something, that I find rather strange. I always thought that, although some of his movies had made it here, Jackie Chan didn't really become super popular until Rumble in the Bronx. If that's true, then why did Nintendo make a Jackie Chan video for the NES in 1990? While you're pondering that question, here are some screen shots. |
