Battle for the Planet of the Apes

Starring Roddy Mcdowall

Ugh. How could a sci-fi series fall this low? Filmed on a spectacularly low budget, Battle for the Planet of the Apes is definitely the weakest in the series. The prologue and epilogue are quite unnecessary, especially considering their irony. The ending leaves a hole in the Apes saga—things don’t end up how they were at the start of Planet of the Apes! It’s like they have an empty block for another movie to fill. Although Tim Burton’s working on a new Apes film, it certainly won’t fill this empty void.

This plot picks up some years after the fourth movie. Caesar now has a son, Cornelius. After several unintentionally hilarious scenes, they explore a city damaged by nuclear war in order to find a recorded message from Caesar’s father, Cornelius. Here is an example of one awful scene:

A human teacher teaches chimpanzees and gorillas by pointing to a blackboard.

TEACHER: Ape must not harm ape… Bad, bad monkey! Your handwriting is awful!

The gorilla gets mad and knocks over things.

The movie contains a lot of action for a low-budget movie, but ends up being very disappointing.

I give Battle for the Planet of the Apes *1/2 out of ****.

Here is my list of the Apes movies from best to worst:

1) Planet of the Apes

2) Conquest of the Planet of the Apes

3) Escape from the Planet of the Apes

4) Beneath the Planet of the Apes

5) Battle for the Planet of the Apes
