William Goldman wrote the Princess Bride originally as a story to tell his girls so they would fall asleep. After forgetting several versions of the story, he decided to write a book on whatever came to mind. The Princess Bride is about a woman who wants to find her love, Wesley. She gets captured by a gang of hooligans that includes the guy who was the voice of the green T-Rex in Toy Story and Andre the Giant. Was Wesley really killed by the dread Pirate Captain Roberts? Or is there hope? The Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies of all time. The only reason why I'm not getting it on DVD is because they are doing a special edition in March. Although Goldman really didn't intend this to be a spoof, it ends up working as one anyway. The romantic scenes are rather serious, but every other scene contains either satire or a light-hearted tone that gives the film a very light tone. The directing by Rob Reiner is very good. This is especially surprising because you wouldn't think the director of When Harry Met Sally could do a fantasy film! Then again, he also did This Is Spinal Tap! Buy this movie now. I give The Princess Bride **** out of ****. |
