This past Friday, I was bored. Not having much of a social life [I'll say!], I decided to go to a movie by myself. I decided to see "O" because it was supposed to have come out around the time of the Columbine shooting-- it was delayed because it had high school violence. "O" is about Mekhi Phifer being the best basketball player at his high school and having the hottest girlfriend, Julia Stiles. Josh Hartnett is jealous because his father/coach of the team Martin Sheen likes Mekhi Phifer better than himself. The violence in O is not related to Columbine really-- it has high school students killing each other in the end, but they aren't entering a school shooting at everyone or anything. It's kind of silly this movie was delayed for that reason. "O" was better than I thought it would be. It's directed decently, has some good acting (Mekhi Phifer, Julia Stiles, Martin Sheen). Unfortunately, Josh Hartnett thinks being a villain requires one to brood in shadows and talk in a low voice-- not unlike my performance as Bob in Crotch: The Motion Picture. [coming to a theater near you.] I found the rap music intrusive and tended to like the opera bits better because they conveyed emotion better in the film. O gets better as it goes along-- it kind of throws you in there in the start of the film with all the characters. It would probably make a decent rental, but nothing to run to the theatres for unless you like Shakespeare and want to see a high school Shakespeare that's not 10 Things I Hate About You. I give it **1/2 out of **** |
