The original Eddie Murphy version of The Nutty Professor had one scene that was arguably funnier than the others: the dinner scene with Sherman's family, the Klumps. Ironically, when the movie was being made, that was a scene the studio wanted to cut out of the movie because it had no direct relation to the plot. Fueled by that movie's success, Eddie Murphy decided to do a sequel centered around the crazy Klump family. This movie starts with Sherman Klump (Eddie Murphy) being engaged to Janet Jackson. Why? No explanation is given. What happened to his love interest in the first movie? If I remember correctly, the first movie ended with their relationship on a relative high note. Anyway, Sherman develops a nasty habit of having "Buddy Love outbursts" every so often. Eventually some zany chaos ensues when Sherman decides to separate the Buddy Love part of his DNA from himself. A dog comes in, knocks the beaker of fluid over, and the fluid comes in contact with a strand of dog hair, bringing Buddy Love back to life. The main problem with The Nutty Professor 2 is that none of the jokes are really funny. Eddie Murphy seems to be trying too hard for a laugh. Certainly, it is a difficult thing to be able to act in 8 or so different parts in tons of make-up and do it convincingly. Ultimately in a comedy, the most important thing is humor, not special effects. The only time I laughed in the movie is when a supporting character was anally raped by a giant hamster. The Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps is a bad comedy and one I only recommend to the die-hard Eddie Murphy fans. I give The Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps *1/2 out of **** |
