Mission Impossible 2

Starring Tom Cruise

In the year 2000, so far, the top grossing movie in the theaters was Mission Impossible 2. It’s not an excellent movie, but it ends up being much better than the James Bond fare of late. In an inspired move, Mission Impossible 2 is almost of a completely different genre than the original: MI was a mystery/spy movie while MI 2 is a summer action popcorn flick.

This time, Tom Cruise gets briefed by Anthony Hopkins about a deadly virus. Tom Cruise’s mission, should he choose to accept it, is to bring both the virus and the cure back to IMF for unexplained reasons. It would be really funny if Tom Cruise said, “NO!” to one of these missions.

This movie has an action-packed opening and ending, just like the first Mission Impossible. It drags in the middle, just like the first Mission Impossible. Thankfully, it doesn’t drag as much thanks to a thrilling sequence at a race track and a more action-oriented climax towards the end of the second act.

While the action scenes are really good, Tom Cruise’s acting has taken a turn for the worse. He doesn’t act, he’s on Cruise Control (name what TV show I stole that quote from). Seriously, his acting is plain awful… Maybe he’s too stressed from doing most of his own stunts and being a producer this time! Mission Impossible 2 is a really fun movie, especially if you have a remote!

I give Mission Impossible *** out of ****.
