Man on the Moon is a comedy-biography
movie based on the life of the oddball comic Andy Kaufman. I
won't go into detail on Kaufman's life, but Zack probably will
since he knows a lot on the subject. Although I wasn't really
familiar with Andy Kaufman before seeing the movie, I enjoyed
Man on the Moon a lot. If you like Kaufman's humor, you'll like
Man on the Moon. This movie tracks Jim Carrey as Andy Kaufman
from his humble beginnings as a struggling stand-up comic to
his death. Danny DeVito plays Carrey's manager, George Shapiro.
I loved every minute of Man on the Moon. What really helps this
flick is Jim Carrey's kick-ass performance as Andy Kaufman. He
does more than an imitation, he lives the character. This isn't
just my opinion either
In several interviews, Carrey said
he had the "spirit of Andy Kaufman" inside him during
Man on the Moon. The pace of the movie works well considering
the broad spectrum it covers. I appreciated they were able to
round up a lot of the cast of Taxi for one little montage sequence.
The directing works very well because of Milos Foreman, a great
director who did such films as Amadeus, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's
Nest, and The People VS. Larry Flynt. I wasn't expecting to enjoy
this as much as I did when I saw it by myself in the theater.
The music by R.E.M. is very good as well. Man on the Moon deserves
at least a rental, if not an outright purchase! I've been a huge fan of Andy Kaufman for about 3 years now, so I was patiently awaiting the release of this movie. Jim Carrey was fantastic in this movie, as was the music. My problem with this movie, is that too much of it is just re-enactment of old Andy Kaufman footage. The movie also had too little insight to man that Andy was when he wasn't behind a camera. They should have shown more of the stuff that hasn't been about a million times on Comedy Central. I like the movie a lot, but I seem
to like it less every time I see it. |
