Gone in 60 Seconds

Starring Nicholas Cage, Angelina Jolie, and Desmond Pfiefer

This is yet another movie that I had been trying to avoid when it was out in theaters. Finally, someone convinced me to watch it. Nicholas Cage is a reformed, ex-car thief, who is forced back into stealing cars, to save the life of his younger brother, who is played by Giovanni Ribisi.

This movie starts out alright, I guess. The part that first caught my eye, was when Nicholas Cage is trying to put together his old team of car thieves, so that he can meet deadline, and steal 50 cars in one night. One of the men that he calls, is currently making money as a driving instructor, or he's the guy that gives the road test at the DMV. It doesn't really matter. Either way, he was in car, and he yelled at the young girl for not being able to drive, but this isn't the important part. As soon as the man turned his head toward the camera, I saw that it was none other, than DESMOND PFIEFER!!!

Some of you might be scratching your heads right now, trying to figure out who this Desmond Pfiefer character is. He was a character in what could possibly be the absolute worst sitcom in the entire history of sitcom. "The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfiefer" took place during the civil war, and the main character, Desmond Pfiefer, was Abraham Lincoln's butler. Mrs. Lincoln was portrayed as quite the promiscuous female, and Ulysses S. Grant was a wacky alcholic who always drunk! As difficult as it would be for this sort of setup to result in a bad show, the writers, if they can be called that, managed to pull it off. I was able to witness two of the episodes before it was canceled after the fourth one, but Mat, impressively, managed to catch all of them along with Greg. This show was so bad, that since UPN was unable to find any positive quotes about Desmond Pfiefer, they used the tagline, "The critics hate it, you'll love it." They were probably more likely to use it, since they did the same for several of their other shows.

Wait, what was I talking about? oh yeah, Gone in 60 Seconds. After watching it, I still don't like Nicholas Cage, and I like Angelina Jolie less. It was more of a step up for Desmond, and oddly enough, This movie has me liking Giovanni Ribisi more. Despite his suckiness in the Mod Squad.

Gone in 60 Seconds, decides not to stick to the formula of having a lot of car chasing in a movie about cars. I thinks there's one, maybe two of them in the entire movie. The rest is filled with lame ass shots, and dialogue written with the sole intent of trying to make Nicholas Cage still look "hip" and "cool" , instead of his usual worthlessness. They fail.

I don't think I want to go as far, as to say, that I completely hated this movie, buts most of that is because of Desmond Pfiefer's presence, which always seems to amuse me.

*1/2 out of ****
