Edward Scissorhands

Starring Johhny Depp, Winona Ryder, Anthony Micheal Hall, and Vincent Price

After an atmospheric beginning with Danny Elfman’s always recognizable music, the opening scene of Edward Scissorhands seems kind of strange. A woman goes door to door selling cosmetic products. As she prepares to go home she fixes her rear-view mirror, revealing an ominous castle in the background. After driving there to sell some cosmetics, she finds Edward Scissorhands—a man with blades for hands dressed in all black. Naturally, she decides to take him home with her. Edward Scissorhands meets her daughter, Winona Ryder, and hates Winona’s boyfriend, Anthony Michael Hall.

This movie is pretty funny, especially the scene of Edward thrashing around like a fish trying to put on a shirt. The contrast between Edward’s odd habits and the cheesy 1950’s style of the neighborhood. Anthony Michael Hall is unusually cast as a jock (considering his normally acting as geeks in movies), but portrays a jerk well. The end of the movie is a little bit lame and I could have done without Winona Ryder as an old woman reminiscing about Edward Scissorhands as the prologue and epilogue.

Edward Scissorhands is certainly a unique movie that I would advise Tim Burton fans or fans of odd films to see. It’s also great for people looking for a totally different movie they’d never rent otherwise.

I give Edward Scissorhands *** out of ****.
