Dr. Dolittle was originally a character in a series of books by Hugh Lofting. He was a British doctor who learned how to speak to the animals and had adventures around the world. A few years ago, Hollywood revamped these stories with Eddie Murphy as the star. This time around, Dr. Dolittle magically hears a dog talking and can talk back to them while making jokes featuring lots of toilet humor. Can a sequel be as good as the original? Dr. Dolittle 2 is about Eddie Murphy stopping the evil loggers from cutting down the woods by preparing a rare species of bear to mate with another of the same species. I really didn't like the original Doctor Dolittle with Eddie Murphy. I thought the teaser bits shown on Entertainment Tonight were hilarious, but the whole movie had a few laughs. I didn't laugh at all in Dr. Dolittle 2. When a trailer showing off the best jokes in a film have lines such as, "Bigger than Pooh? You'll be so big they'll be saying, Winnie the Who?," you know you're in trouble! Eddie Murphy just cruises through the part as the lead and some of the scenes of the bears chasing each other through the woods become unintentionally disturbing. You think with a sequel they would do more than the same talking-animal schtick in the original, but you would be wrong. The first movie was kind of like a, "Wow, I can talk to animals!" and this sequel is, "Gee, I can talk to animals... Let's make a romantic comedy with bears in the lead!" I give Dr. Dolittle 2 * out of ****. |
