Clerks

Starring Brian O'Halloran, and Jeff Anderson

Clerks was Kevin Smith’s first movie, supposedly made by maxing out five credit cards. It was very low budget and shot in black and white, although it actually turns out to be better and consistently funnier than most of Smith’s other movies. Clerks deals with two clerks: one works at a Quick Stop grocery store and the other works at a video rental store. Both of them slack off a lot and deal with various characters such as Jason Mewes as Jay and Kevin Smith as Silent Bob. Even though this is his first movie, a lot of Kevin Smith’s writing and directing hasn’t changed all that much in his later films. His characters always have long conversations, the shots are usually done in long takes with simplistic camera setups, and it could easily be adapted into a stage play from its long stretches of dialogue. Many of the jokes in Clerks work, although the pacing can be a bit slow sometimes. Still, Clerks is worth renting as long as you don’t find lots of nasty language—but since the people that read reviews on this site probably don’t care about that kind of thing, it’s safe to say that it’s not too offensive.

I give Clerks *** out of ****.
