Chocolat

Starring Juliette Binoche, Johnny Depp, and Alfred Molina

Chocolat was one of the movies in the 2001 Oscars that oddly got nominated for a Best Picture Oscar despite not being a really admired flick. It got in mainly because Miramax spent a hell of a lot of money on advertising.

Chocolat is about Juliette Binoche moving into a new town with her daughter and opens a chocolate shop. Alfred Molina tells the local preacher to preach about the sins of chocolate and of gypsies. Johnny Depp, a gypsy, shows up in town. Can Juliette make her chocolates in peace?

I thought Chocolat was pretty lame. The scenery is pretty, but the plot comes off as silly. I find it very hard to believe that people would stop going to a chocolate shop because the church told them not to. Johnny Depp isn't in this movie that much despite being on the cover of the video box.

I enjoyed the scenes with the chocolates in them. It made me feel very hungry. In this movie, they drink hot chocolate that looks like the consistency of mud. The acting is OK, but nobody really stands out.

I give Chocolat ** out of ****.
