Carrie

Starring Sissy Spacek, and John Travolta

Carrie was the first novel Stephen King wrote under his real name. Shortly after it was published, Brian De Palma made a movie out of it. I only read half of the novel, so I really can’t say how accurate it was.

After a tracking shot through a female locker room showing lots of naked teens, Carrie has her first period. Shocked at the concept, she cries as girls throw tissues at her, chanting, “Plug it up!” After being helped by a gym teacher, Carrie goes to her wacky ultra-religious mother’s house. Soon, Carrie gets asked to the prom by a hot guy… But will the jock (John Travolta) interfere?

Carrie really isn’t scary at all. A lot of the shots are questionable, including one at the dance where the camera circles around Carrie and her date 100 times in an attempt to make the audience throw up. As far as I can tell, Carrie is pretty faithful to the original novel, although some scenes aren’t included because of the movie’s low budget.

Carrie is an interesting horror movie, but it really is more of a dark comedy.

[e.n.- that last statement, made no sense.]

I give Carrie *** out of ****.
