BROKEN ARROW seems like the perfect money maker. Have tons of explosions and throw in two of the most popular actors in the US and you have a blockbuster smash hit right? I forget if this movie did well in the theatres, but I would say that it is your standard action movie. The plot of Broken Arrow is sort of simple, but it falls victim to the over-emphasis on plot that action movies have had recently. An action movie is supposed to have gun fights and things blowing up. It is not supposed to be a bunch of military terms and an insight on why people do this or that. At least, that is the way I see them. =). The plot itself tells about how Travolta and Slater go on a midnight run in a nifty stealth plane containing two nukes and fly it over a field to see if any radiation in released. Travolta has Slater eject out of the pilot seat and then he ejects, as do the nukes. The movie makes up some lame reason why the nukes don't explode when they land. Anyway, the rest of the movie involves with Travola and company transporting the nukes from here to there. Meanwhile Slater meets a Park Ranger and they both go to try to catch up to the nukes and disable them. Like I said earlier, standard stuff. Travolta pulls off a good performance as the villain and Slater is rather ho-hum as the hero. The movie takes things a little too far. You might be able to stomach Slater taking down a helicopter by taking pot-shots at it with his pistol, but how about just from a helicopter onto a moving plane without a parachute and still being able to walk? I would advise you to see Broken Arrow if you are a fan of Travolta or if you want to see an OK action movie. But there are better ones out there... I give Broken Arrow ** out of ****. |
