The Black Cauldron

Starring a bunch of skeletons

This was the cartoon that almost destroyed Disney’s animation department. It cost them a lot of money, and almost nobody went and saw it. It is also based off of a series of five books by Lloyd Alexander. Part of the problem was combining elements from two books into one movie.

Taran is Pig-Keeper. But he watches over a magic pig named Hen Wen that can tell the future. Unfortunately Hen Wen runs away as the Horned King approaches. Can Hen Wen be saved before he turns into Bacon Bits?

This is the only Disney cartoon rated PG. I can definitely see why, but Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame also should have been rated PG. There are lots of gloomy skeletons and a scary looking villain. Also at one point a character turns into a frog and leaps between a fat woman’s breasts. There is only one song in the entire movie, and it is quite short. Many of the characters lines are funny, except for Gurgi, the annoying sidekick character who speaks just like Donald Duck.

The Black Cauldron is one of my favorite Disney cartoons, and you’ll love it if you’re into fantasy stuff.

I give The Black Cauldron *** out of ****.
