Batman and Robin

Starring George Clooney, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Uma Thurman

Mat

Batman and Robin is the most recent, and worst, of the Batman movies—even including the original one from the 1960’s! While Batman Forever was noticeably lighter in tone and campier than Tim Burton’s superior Batman and Batman Returns, Batman and Robin turns the campiness to full blast as you watch possibly the worst comic book movie ever (Superman IV: The Quest For Peace a close second). So what sucks so much?

The story tries to fit too many characters into one character. The two villains, Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman), work OK, but add in Bane and a mad scientist and the whole plot gets too convoluted. Don’t even mention Batgirl, whose role is like a cameo—“Hi, look at me, I’m romantic tension for Robin!” The outfits are anatomically correct, even more so than in Batman Forever. Batman and Robin is full of lame puns, like Mr. Freeze’s, “The Iceman cometh!”

To be fair, George Clooney is better than expected as the lead role as Batman. His age seems right for Bruce Wayne, even though his Batman falters. Arnold Schwarzenegger makes an attempt for dramatic acting mourning the death of his wife as Mr. Freeze. The actor who plays Alfred the butler does a good job as always.

Don’t watch this movie. Watch Batman and Batman Returns for decent Batman movies—or watch Batman: The Animated Series for that matter. Even the mediocre Batman Forever looks like Citizen Kane when compared to Batman and Robin.

I give Batman and Robin * out of ****.

Zack

I'd just like to say that Mat has no idea what he's talking about when he mentions bad comic movies. He's only seen a few. He's hasn't seen Spiderman or Dr. Strange. He's never seen any of the two Captain America movies. If you want an example of a badcomic book movie, just watch any movie that is based on a Marvel comic, that was made before Blade.

I'd also like to say that despite what Mat says, there was nothing OK about this movie. (alright, Alicia Silverstone in tight leather was good, but that's it.) Not a single person in this movie was cast very well,(except for Alfred), and what the hell was that crap they tried to pass off as Bane. Anyone who's read the comic, knows that Bane would be anyone's henchman. He's the criminal genius who exhausted Batman, and then broke his back.

When Mat says that George Clooney was better then expected, it should be obvious that he's never read the comic. Clooney would have been better cast as a pregnant, hermaphrodite Orangutan.

So in closing, Joel Shumacher (the director) should be shot in the back of the head.
