Batman Forever is when the Batman movies started to take a turn for the worse, thanks to director Joel Schumacher. The tone moves from dark to campy and the main Danny Elfman theme from the first two movies is replaced by a lame theme! Edward Nigma (Jim Carrey), an employee of Wayne Enterprises, wants to show Bruce Wayne (Val Kilmer) his new invention. When judged as too radical, Jim Carrey gets pushed to the brink and becomes the Riddler. Meanwhile Two Face (Tommy Lee Jones) kills a young mans parents, creating Batmans side-kick, Robin. Can the duo stop Two Face and Riddler from hypnotizing Gotham City? The plot actually ties together the different villains and characters better than Batman Returns did, but is hampered by cheesy dialogue and bad performances. While Val Kilmer is OK as Bruce Wayne, he exceeds as Batman, showing off Batmans grace and physical strength better than any other Batman so far. Jim Carrey makes a decent Riddler, although he feels like Ace Ventura in a costume at points. Tommy Lee Jones makes an awful Two Face, especially since Harvey Dent was introduced in the original Batman as Billy Dee Williams. He smirks, is an asshole, and makes stupid jokes. Chris ODonnel as Robin does a mediocre job, but seems way too old for the part. Batman Forever is entertaining as a rental, but hardly a superior Batman movie. I give Batman Forever **1/2 out of
****. I agree with Mat in the aspect that the tone was totally wrong for this movie. Two Face was horrible. He isn't supposed to crack jokes. Al Pacino would have a much better Two Face. Jim Carey wasn't bad as the Riddler, but the Riddler wouldn't try to take over Gotham. He's just a brilliant thief. I hate the dialogue, and Val Kilmer sucks. His stature is the only thing that's better than Micheal Keaton, when it comes to being Batman. Just writting about this movie pisses me off, because Joel Shumacher made a really shitty movie based on a comic book that continually kicks ass. I hope he gets leprosy so his dick falls off. ** out of **** |
