Most Disney feature-length animated movies are considered to be inoffensive, sweet stories where animals smile and sing and dance for an hour and a half. Atlantis tries to buck the trend by being an animated PG-rated action movie. This is significant because this is Disney's second PG cartoon (Black Cauldron was the first), possibly meaning that Disney might eventually try go the way of Japanese anime and end up making cartoons with stories aimed at adults. Atlantis is about a smart linguist (Michael J. Fox) who goes on an adventure with Jim Varney and lots of other characters to find Atlantis. I thought Atlantis was going to be horrible from the trailers, but I ended up liking it better than I thought I would. Atlantis is not nearly as good as Dreamworks' latest animated flick, Shrek. Most of the voice-acting in Atlantis is fine. Michael J. Fox does a better job here than he did in Stuart Little, Leonard Nimoy does a good job as the Atlantean King. Jim Varney performance is OK, but it seems more like the same Ernest stuff. This was Varney's last role and supposively there was a movie made called Ernest the Pirate that was never released. The story isn't the most creative thing in the world, but it works. I appreciated some of the darker aspects of the plot, but it's not as bleak as a lot of post-apocalyptic anime that's available. I would say Disney's bleakest cartoon movie yet is Hunchback of Notre Dame-- probably one of my favorite of the Disney cartoons, although it didn't do well in the box office. The animation is well-done in most places, although at times you can definitely tell what is CG and what is hand-drawn. The water looks like shit in the beginning though. Even though the acting, animation, and music (although there's no songs for once!) are done with polish, Atlantis isn't really anything special. It's completely forgettable and the ending leaves itself open for a sequel... I can imagine that Disney is developing Atlantis 2: Return to the Surface right now! I give Atlantis **1/2 out of ****. |
